TCG targets daytime trade with pub re-openings

Managed pubco TCG has revealed it is spending £400k to refurbish two of its venues which will focus more heavily on the daytime trade when they re-open later this month.

TCG, which currently operates 75 managed pubs and bars, has said the refurbishments of Squares in Nottingham and the Sailors Arms in Newquay are designed to broaden the daytime appeal of both sites while not alienating the venues’ existing customers.

“Both Squares and the Sailors Arms were trading strongly prior to the refurbishments and had excellent reputations in their local area, primarily for their late night offer,” TCG chief operating officer Nigel Wright said.

Both sites currently combine a pub and bar offering as well as a late-night club.

“We identified an opportunity to take a bigger slice of the daytime custom and we’re confident that the targeted investment will enable both sites to grow this side of their business, as well as refreshing the offer for their late-night customers,” Wright added.

Daytime

Following the re-opening, visitors to Squares will see improved seating booths, a softer colour palate and a new pizza area to boost lunchtime trade.

The venue will now open at 9am in a bid to attract more customers for breakfast and morning coffee.

Investment at the Sailors Arms has also focused on interiors with a new 1950s-inspired seaside design in the traditional pub area. Contemporary features, industrial furnishings and distressed timbers are all included.

Two separate areas in the Newquay venue will be merged and new glass windows will help create one space with an additional 50 covers. A hot dog cart and gourmet popcorn in four flavours will also add to the pub’s daytime-orientated, seaside feel.

“The Sailors Arms and Squares are good examples of sites which will receive capex this year – strong performers which can greatly increase trade with the right investment,” said Wright. “Our aim is to help each of our pubs and bars to be the best of its kind in its local area,” he concluded.
