Gordon Ramsay: 2012 'best year' for restaurant group

Restaurant group Gordon Ramsay Holdings has reported that 2012 was its 'best year to date' having returned to profit after two challenging years for the business.

In accounts filed with Companies House for the year ending August 2012, the company showed it had made a profit of £1.4m, compared to a loss of £4.1m in the previous year.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) almost doubled to £4.9m from the previous year and continued to grow throughout the latter part of the year.

Ramsay, who has run the business with managing director Stuart Gillies since April 2011 , said it was with 'great pride' that they were filing the accounts this time around.

"We have negotiated a difficult path over recent years and I’m delighted all our hard work has paid off in what is still a challenging climate. We now have an extremely robust business which is only going to go from strength to strength, nurturing some of the best talent in the industry and offering amazing dining experiences around the world,” he said.

Cost control

During the period the company, which operates 11 restaurants in the UK has businesses and consultancies at 19 locations abroad, opened its largest UK restaurant to date - Bread Street Kitchen - and continued with international expansion by opening Gordon Ramsay Steak in Las Vegas and entering into two consultancies in Doha.

However, the company also saw its consultancy with Canadian restaurant Rotisserie Laurier BBQ come to an end after its owner said the chef did not spend enough time at the business.

Gillies said a continuation of the company's new strategy, launched in 2011, alongside cost control had helped make the business healthier.

He said: “I’m delighted with the financial performance of the group. Our success has been down to prudent planning and cost controls as well as strategic investment both in terms of systems and processes as well as new sites. Our growth and success in the US is just one example of this and we are looking forward to the future with confidence.”

GRH continued to expand into the US through the rest of 2012, opening The Fat Cow in LA in September and two more restaurants in Las Vegas - Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill and Gordon Ramsay BurGR - in December.
