Pipers Crisps has added a chorizo flavour to its range of artisan crisps using a specially-created chorizo made in a farmer and butcher's on-site charcuterie in Kirkby Malham, Yorkshire.

Product details:

The Lincolnshire-based manufacturer, founded in 2004, chooses flavours for their crisps which are sourced from 'carefully selected, passionate, artisan producers.' The chorizo crisps are made with a dry-cured sausage produced by Chris Wildman who rears his rare-breed Oxford Sandy & Black pigs.

Kirkby Malham chorizo contains coarsely ground pork, hand-mixed with smoked paprika, pepper, garlic and ginger. Once the mix has been prepared and put into its skin, it’s hung for three weeks to dry and cure.

USP:

The chorizo crisps are the first new flavour introduced by Pipers Crisps for several years. The sausage is produced by Wildman as part of his family-run company which mainly produces hams, bacon and sausages for selling locally.

Availability:

The chorizo crisps, and all the products in the entire Piper Crisps range, are available in 40g bags which are sold in cases of 24 or 40. Cases of 15 packs of 150g ‘sharing’ bags are also available.

Price:

Pipers will supply the crisps either direct or through wholesalers with various pricing levels dependent on the buyer's requirements. Hospitality businesses looking to stock the crisps are advised to contact the manufacturer directly.

Why should you buy it?

Alex Albone, managing director of Pipers Crisps, said: "I'd wanted a meat flavour in the range for some time, but hadn't found the right taste or an appropriate producer. When I visited Chris Wildman at his family-run enterprise, where there are three generations working together, I knew I’d found the taste and provenance I was looking for.

"Chris himself is a fifth generation butcher, so he knows a thing or two about meat.  The on-site charcuterie is really exciting.  Chris uses only local, rare-breed, outdoor reared pigs to produce a range of hams, bacons and sausages - including Chorizo - for local businesses and farmers’ markets.

"This delicious Kirkby Malham Chorizo is the perfect taste for our crisps - a distinctive, strong flavour without being too salty."

Other products on the market:

  • Pipers Crisps now creates eight flavours: Lye Cross cheddar and onion, Burrow Hill cider vinegar and sea salt, Karnataka black pepper and sea salt, Anglesey sea salt, Wissington spicy tomato, Biggleswade sweet chilli and unsalted.
  • Last month fellow premium crisps manufacturer Burts Chips teamed up with Diageo to launch Guinness-flavoured crisps.
