Death by Burrito Mexican grill & cocktail bar to open at Catch in Shoreditch
Situated on Kingsland Road, the venue will feature experimental cocktails and a concise, street food-style menu with authentic Mexican burritos, tacos and small bites. It will sit alongside the Catch bar, which will continue to operate across both floors of the building.
“We’re really excited to be launching Death by Burrito and have been working hard to explore the relationship between food and cocktails,” said Ola – a former video and art editor. “The complex flavour of Jose Cuervo Tradicional (tequila) has given us infinite flavour pairing combinations to play with.
“We’ve always wanted to find a way to bring the Rebel Dining Society experience to a wider audience and think that with Death by Burrito we’ve cracked it.”
Founded by Ola in 2009, the Rebel Dining Society aims to ‘push the boundaries of fine-dining’, showcasing new culinary ideas, interactive art concepts and live performances. The business works on projects to develop menus and marketing events for brands and creative agencies
Now spurred on by the recent rise of the street food culture,Death by Burrito is the first standalone concept for the Rebel Dining Society, featuring a seating capacity of 30, with ‘experimental cocktails’ taking a central focus in the dining experience. Mixologist Ryan Chetiyawardana (formerly of Worship St Whistling Shop, Purl and 69 Colebrook Row) has also developed a ‘tequila-only’ cocktail list.
The grill’s food includes braised pork belly burritos and baja fish tacos served with Death By Burrito’s special deconstructed guacamole and blue corn chips, lobster ceviche, grilled octopus and poblano crepes. Side offerings include sweet potato strings and drunken beans.
Sample menu
Death by Burrito’s sample menu features three flavours of burritos and tacos; grilled duck breast, smoked beef short rib and grilled mushrooms, all priced between 10 and 12 pounds. Small bites (£5-£7) include courgette flowers and goats cheese filo wraps, crab cakes, stuffed plantain croquettes and tempura shrimp.
The Catch bar, which originally opened in 2000, will also be revamped, with a new drinks list offering a range of ‘grown up’ spirits and American beers.
The venue is the latest in a number of street food-style concepts to hit the capital. Fluid Movement, the team behind London bars Purl and Worship Street Whistling Shop, opened their third venue earlier this month - Dach & Sons,a 70-cover speakeasy bar and restaurant in Hampstead.
Meanwhile, James Knappett, formerly of The Ledbury and Marcus Wareing's The Berkeley, has opened the hot dog and Champagne concept Bubbledogs.Other street food-style concepts to recently open around London include MeatLiquor, MeatMarket and Burger & Lobster.
