Hospitality set to benefit from Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

The UK’s hospitality industry is set to benefit from the double bank holiday weekend afforded by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as the majority of Brits plan to remain on home soil to celebrate.

VisitEngland’s Diamond Jubilee Trip Tracker found that just 2 per cent of the population are planning to take a trip abroad during the extended weekend with many of those remaining here planning to get into the Diamond Jubilee spirit and celebrate it in some way.

Of the 1,246 adults questioned by TNS for VisitEngland, 29 per cent of them said they would be taking part in some Jubilee-related activity, from street parties to official celebrations and events, meaning businesses hosting Jubilee-themed events and packages could benefit.

Although many of those questioned said they were leaving plans to the last minute for the weekend, 8 per cent confirmed they would be taking at least one overnight stay during the weekend and 18 per cent said they were planning to dine out in that period, meaning restaurants, hotels and B&Bs could experience an uplift in trade.

British pubs

And with extended licensing hours on the Friday and Saturday of the Jubilee weekend, as well as the two days holiday, pubs in particular are expecting to be busier than usual.

Predictions by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) show that up to 80 million more pints of beer and an extra 7.5 million meals could be served during the bank holiday weekend as Brits use a national institution to toast the Queen.

“When it comes to celebrating a great occasion, beer and pubs have so much to offer that says something special about being British,” said BBPA chairman Brigid Simmonds.

Diamond Jubilee offers

Many pubs, restaurants and hotels are already planning to capitalise on the event and have come up with a range of ideas to support it and bring in trade. Ideas include Diamond Jubilee-themed afternoon teas at many hotels, special Jubilee weekend packages and themed dishes, such as Gourmet Burger Kitchen's burger The Windsor using beef sourced from the Royal farms in Windsor.

“The double bank holiday is a great opportunity to get out for a day trip or short break and discover what England has to offer, and it’s great to see that so many Brits are planning to do just that," said VisitEngland chief executive James Berresford.

"The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will kick off the summer in Royal style and showcase our heritage to the world. Whether it’s cheering on a winner at the Epsom Derby, grabbing a spot by the riverside to watch the spectacular Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, or simply getting to know your neighbours over tea and Victoria Sponge at a local street party – there is no better time to take a break at home."
