Meliá Hotels predicts strong 2012 performance in UK
In the UK Meliá said the Meliá White House hotel in London's Albany Street had contributed positively to an increase of 3.1 per cent in RevPAR in the first quarter of the year in the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, excluding Spain.
The company, previously known as Sol Meliá, reported revenue growth across its global estate of 7.6 per cent in Q1 while RevPAR grew by 7.2 per cent and average room rates jumped by more than 10 per cent.
In its financial results Meliá said the UK would continue to be an important market for the operator, especially in 2012.
"A strong third quarter is also expected due to the hosting of the Olympics and the opening of the new ME London hotel, a flagship property that will add to our successful presence in London," Meliá Hotels International said.
Elsewhere in Europe the operator saw the French and German markets leading growth while Greece, Italy and Spain fared less well.
ME London
Over the last few decades the operator has pursued a policy of 'intense market diversification' giving it a presence in 35 countries in an attempt not to rely on any single market performance.
Although the majority of new hotel growth in 2012 will focus on emerging markets and upscale brands, Meliá is planning to open ME London on The Strand in July. The company explained the long-awaited opening was strategically important for the global brand.
"2012 will see the inauguration of strategic projects that will contribute not only to the future performance of the company but also to its prestige and the international positioning of its brands, such as the ME London, the hotel designed by Foster & Partners in the heart of the City."
Aspiring chefs looking to work at the 157-bedroom hotel have been encouraged to submit a Masterchef-style video demonstrating their passion for food in an innovative employment technique.
Earlier this year Meliá confirmed it was to open its first hotel outside London as part of a Manchester development project. All its new openings are scheduled to be under management or franchise contracts or variable leases.
