Electronic Temperature Instruments wins Queen's Award for Enterprise

Peter Webb, founder and managing director of Electronic Temperature Instruments which has been given a Queen's Award for Enterprise for International Trade

Electronic Temperature Instruments, a UK manufacturer of thermometers and temperature probes, has won a Royal seal of approval after the company won the accolade of a Queen's Award for Enterprise for International Trade.

The Queen's Awards, announced each year on 21 April - the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, recognise business performance, reward outstanding achievement by UK companies and encourage British business development.

Emblem

Electronic Temperature Instruments was formed in 1983 by Peter Webb and his wife Miriam and helps lead the market in manufacture and design of temperature probes. The Worthing-based company currently sells over one million thermometers a year.

The awards are made on the advice of the Prime Minister and a Government and industry committee in three business categories - international trade, innovation and sustainable development. They are described as being the UK’s highest accolade for business success and recipients receive a number of benefits including the full use of an award emblem.

Peter Webb, founder and managing director of Electronic Temperature Instruments said the award was a great honour for the company. "By keeping our manufacturing and Research & Development in the UK we have been able to support our local economy whilst successfully growing the business. I am a great advocate of British manufacturing. We make many fantastic products in this country, which is a fact often overlooked."

Salmonella and regulations

Electronic Temperature Instruments saw company turnover triple in the wake of the salmonella eggs scare in the 1980s and has benefited from the move in increased food hygiene regulations.

The company had annual turnover in 2011 of more than £7m and exports to the USA and other global markets.

Last year Electronic Temperature Instruments launched a sous vide thermometer kit to add to its range which also includes digital food probes, oven and fridge/freezer thermometers and USB thermometers which connect to computers for better monitoring and analysis.

Electronic Temperature Instruments will be officially presented with the award at a ceremony at the company's Worthing headquarters in the summer.
