Camra launches first Community Pubs Month, names Local Pubs of the Year
As the first ever Community Pubs Month kicks off, Camra revealed nearly 90 per cent of young adults use local pubs to socialise and over a third of UK adults use 'the local' for community and family events and not just to have a drink.
The month of events in April is designed to increase pub footfall and help an industry that continues to suffer with regular venue closures. Mike Benner, Camra chief executive said society would suffer without the pub.
"Camra’s new campaign is all about reaffirming the vital importance of local pubs, and the essential role they play in many people’s lives. Camra’s research shows people turn to their local pub during meaningful events, so whether you are a real ale lover or someone who enjoys the weekly quiz down your local pubs are a core part of our identity and heritage," he said.
Camra has also released the full list of winners of its Local Pub of the Year prizes chosen by local branches. All the pubs, including a community-owned venue and a pub on a railway station, will now compete to replicate The Bridge End Inn's success as National Pub of the Year.
