Hotel prices in the capital rose again this month with an average overnight stay in a London hotel costing £144 in March, up 5 per cent from a year ago, while hotels in Glasgow, Manchester and Brighton also defied the trend of falling prices in the provinces.

The latest figures from the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) compiled by the hotel price comparison website trivago.co.uk show the average hotel price is up 3 per cent in Manchester, while one of the cheapest UK cities, Glasgow, also saw prices rise by just 1 per cent.

Brighton hotels have experienced the biggest jump in prices this month with hotels in the city costing 12 per cent more than March 2011. The South Coast holiday destination has the joint third highest average overnight price in the UK of £93.

Expensive city

The monthly index shows the average overnight accommodation prices for a standard double room in the most popular European cities on trivago.

Once again London rates as one of the most expensive cities in terms of hotel prices in Europe. In the European index the UK capital is second only to Geneva where the average overnight stay sets visitors back £216.

UK cities

A one-night hotel stay in Manchester will cost the same as Brighton - £93 - but Edinburgh remains the second priciest UK city despite seeing its average hotel price fall by 4 per cent to £98.

Newcastle's prices have fallen by the most, dropping 13 per cent to £77, but Blackpool has also seen hotel prices plummet by more than 10 per cent in March compared to a year ago. The Lancashire seaside town is the cheapest place to stay on the index with average prices falling by 11 per cent to £53.
