The English Rose hotel chain is selling four of its Scarborough hotels after part of its business was placed into administration.

Administrators MCR and PricewaterhouseCoopers have appointed Colliers International to sell The Royal Hotel, Clifton Hotel, Wrea Head Country House Hotel and Hackness Grange Hotel.

Julian Troup, head of UK Hotels Agency at Colliers International, is leading the sale of the Royal and Clifton Hotels.

“We are anticipating a great deal of interest from a variety of different types of buyers,” he said. “The Royal and Clifton have already attracted strong interest from corporate purchasers.”

The Royal Hotel is located above the town's South Bay and has 110 bedrooms plus eight suites and a Presidential suite. The Clifton Hotel offers 70 en-suite bedrooms and overlooks Scarborough's North Bay.

Location

Peter Bean, director at Colliers International, is leading the sale of Wrea Head Country House Hotel and Hackness Grange Hotel.

“Wrea Head and Hackness Grange are very attractive properties which are superbly located for developing a high-quality hotel business and they will appeal to private buyers and small groups alike,” said Bean. “They are popular, much-loved hotels with a strong income stream, as are the Royal and Clifton.”

The Wrea Head Hotel, located on the edge of Scarborough, has 20 en-suite letting bedrooms while Hackness Grange Hotel is situated near the North York Moors National Park and has 33 letting bedrooms.

Soaring tax bills and corporate banking fees have been blamed for the hotels’ problems. The firm’s sister company, English Rose Hotels Yorkshire Ltd, which includes the Green Man Family Inn, Malton, in its portfolio, has not been affected.
