Canadian gastro bar opens in Newcastle

Shark Club gastro bar – an award-winning chain from Western Canada – has opened its first European venue in Newcastle.

Situated in the heart of the city, opposite Newcastle United’s home ground, St James’ Park, Shark Club takes up prime position on the ground floor of a new four-star, 175 room, multi million pound Sandman Signature hotel.

Mark Davies, executive general manager of Shark Club, said: “We’re very excited about the launch of the UK’s first Shark Club gastro bar and look forward to replicating the success we’ve achieved in Canada through the launch of this state-of-the-art venue in Newcastle.

“Shark Club is known for having the best hospitality in Canada, and Newcastle is known for having the best hospitality in the UK – so they’re a perfect match.”

Paul Szomoru, business development manager from NewcastleGateshead Initiative added: “We are in no doubt that the Shark Club gastro bar will prove to be a fantastic asset to the city. We’re delighted that they’ve chosen our city to launch their international expansion.”

The venue is 3734sq.ft and offers table-side service to drinkers and diners. Sixteen trainers from Canada flew over to the UK last month to train Shark Club’s 150 new recruits about Canadian hospitality.

The contemporary interior features 40 HD flat screen TVs, a 3D wall screen, large dance floor, private function and VIP rooms and a heated outside terrace.

Head chef Wayne Jackson, who previously worked for The Angel in Corbridge, Northumberland, has developed the diverse menu through a series of taste panels comprising both Canadian and UK taste experts. The menu fuses together a mix of Asian, Italian and Mid-West Canadian food and signature dishes include Ahi Tuna Tacos, Chicken and Brie Sliders, King Shark Back Ribs and the mighty Shark Platter.

Shark Club will be looking to expand throughout the UK and is currently assessing suitable locations for its next venue.
