Whitbread plans Premier Inn at Barry Waterfront development

Whitbread is hoping to gain planning permission to build an 80-bedroom Premier Inn at the multi-million pound redevelopment of Barry Waterfront.

If the plans submitted to the Vale of Glamorgan Council are accepted, Whitbread will start building the £7.5m hotel in the Innovation Quarter on Barry Waterfront early next year.

Richard Pearson, acquisition manager for Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants, said: “We have been working extremely hard to ensure our Barry hotel is an exemplary development for Premier Inn.

"Whitbread’s financial strength means we can be the first hotel into major regeneration sites and act as a catalyst for further development. At Barry we will have an attractively designed and sustainable 80-bedroom hotel really adding weight to the local economy. I very much look forward to getting on site and progressing the development to the next stage.”

Regeneration

On completion, the hotel, which will create 68 jobs, is expected to deliver a major boost for the local economy and will form part of major regeneration plans for the Welsh resort.

It will sit within the Innovation Quarter, overlooking the regenerated No.1 Dock and there are plans to develop the area with new restaurants and cafes.

Vale of Glamorgan Council leader Gordon Kemp said: “A great deal of time and effort has been put into the complex planning, design and legal negotiations associated with this exciting project, involving officers from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the Welsh Government and Premier Inn.

“If approved for planning, this is excellent timing for the hotel and restaurant development as it will be well placed to complement the adjoining Phase 2 Waterfront development, which was granted planning approval last month. The future is a very positive one for Barry thanks to the investment and commitment of investors such as Premier Inn."
