Pub group Wetherspoon is preparing to open three new hotels this summer, bringing up the number of hotels in its portfolio to 23.

The hotels, which are all part of properties that include pubs, will be located in Weston-super-Mare, Newbury and Leighton Buzzard.
Wetherspoon currently operates 20 hotels, as around one in every 40 pubs in its portfolio has a hotel attached to it.

Although the company plans to continue opening more hotels, these will always be secondary to its core pub business, Wetherspoon told BigHospitality.

Pubs with rooms

“Wetherspoon is a pub chain, it’s as simple as that. The reason we started hotels is that we bought a pub with rooms above it and thought we may as well turn them into hotel rooms rather than keep them for staff accommodation,” said a spokesperson.

“There will be more hotels opening but these will always be on sites where there was an existing hotel or rooms attached to pubs that we purchase.”

Wetherspoon hotels have an average of 30 bedrooms.

Summer openings

The next hotel to open will be in a property in Weston-super-Mare, due to open next week, following the £2.4m refurbishment of the Cabot Court Hotel.

The property includes a pub on two floors, a beer terrace and a pavement-style café at the front. The attached 23-bedroom hotel includes a mix of family rooms, twin rooms and double bedrooms.

Wetherspoon said the Weston-super-Mare property will be generating 100 jobs in the local community, including positions in management, bar staff, kitchen staff, service staff, and hotel staff.

Later this month, Wetherspoon will also be opening a pub and hotel site in Newbury, Berkshire, with another site set to open in August in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.
