Scottish restaurants lead list of top diner-rated venues

For the second time in three years, Martin Wishart’s eponymous restaurant in Edinburgh has been named the best restaurant in the UK, for the year up to February 2011.

Glaswegian restaurant Piccolo Mondo followed in second position, and was also voted the best Italian restaurant in the UK.

Wishart, who saw his Edinburgh restaurant fall to seventh place in last year’s diner-rated awards, said: “I’m over the moon to sit at the top of the list again this year. There are so many very good restaurants in the list that it is deeply satisfying to be amongst them and to be consistently highly rated by my customers.”

Michel Roux Jr’s Le Gavroche held onto third place in this year’s list achieving the highest ratings for service, which was described by Toptable users as “discreet and exceedingly efficient”.

Other London restaurants Chez Bruce and Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s scooped fourth and fifth place, leaving room for a further Scottish restaurant to sit within the top 10 – India Quay in Glasgow.

Last year’s number one restaurant​, Gidleigh Park in Devon, failed to even make the list this year, although executive chef Michael Caines’ Bath Priory caught a mention at number 55.

Lucy Taylor, head of restaurant relations, said: “It is particularly refreshing to see some less well known restaurants such as The Case Restaurant with Rooms in Sudbury, The Black Horse Restaurant and Bar in Swadlingcote and local heroes such as Piccolo Mondo making it into the top 100. This reflects both the breadth of restaurants featured on Toptable and our customers’ passion and enthusiasm for dining out.”
