Darroze’s eponymous restaurant at The Connaught and Outlaw’s eponymous restaurant in Rock, Cornwall, join the list of 14 British restaurants now holding two Michelin stars.
Twelve new one star additions have been announced for England, including Galvin La Chapelle, Gauthier Soho, Paris House and Viajante.
Gordon Ramsay also attained his fifth UK star for Petrus, which he wrestled back from former chief executive Chris Hutcheson at the end of last year. However he lost a Bib Gourmand for Foxtrot Oscar, the only award of that kind he held.
No new three star restaurants were announced, meaning The Fat Duck and Waterside Inn in Bray, Gordon Ramsay Royal Hospital Road and Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester in London remain the only four in the British Isles.
England only
Derek Bulmer, former editor of the guide, told BigHospitality this morning that he was surprised no new stars were given in Scotland, Wales or Ireland.
“There are more stars in the 2011 guide than there have ever been in any previous Michelin guide,” he said. “It’s a reflection of the way that the quality is rising and has been rising for years.
“In the UK, there are 12 new stars this year, and that’s a reflection of the fact that food in this country is getting better all the time.”
Several restaurants have lost a star, including the Star Inn at Harome, which this year was named the Gastropub of the Year, The New Angel in Dartmouth, which has been rebranded as Angelique by new owner Alan Murchison, and Deanes in Belfast.
Value triumphs
Rebecca Burr, Michelin UK & Ireland editor in chief, said: “There is no doubt that 2010 was a difficult year but those hotels and restaurants that represented value for money, at whatever price, were the ones who were best placed to weather the storm.
“The country embraces all kinds of restaurants and every type of cuisine and the public’s appetite shows no signs of abating.”
