Chefs looking to enter the National Chef of the Year 2010 have three weeks left; now the deadline has been extended to 16 July.

To reflect the diversity of the eating out sector, applicants will this year be able to enter the competition under four specific categories, including Asian/ Oriental; Modern British/ Irish; European; and African, the Americas and Australia.

Entrants are asked to submit an application form, detailing their chosen canapés, main course and dessert, before 40 semi-finalists are chosen to take part in regional heats, each focusing on a new category, at catering colleges across the UK.

Hunger to win

Simon Hulstone, chef proprietor of The Elephant in Torquay and current National Chef of the Year, said: “The entire experience of being part of the National Chef of the Year competition is something I will never forget.

“For those about to submit their entries dashing around trying to get the final touches to those dishes absolutely perfect, all I can say is ‘go for it’. It’s an amazing experience and one you’ll never forget.  Believe me, if you get through to the semi-finals and your journey stops there it will only give you the drive and determination to continue on your quest for next year – once this competition gets in your blood, all that will satisfy this hunger is continuing on until you win.”

Hulstone, who won the competition in 2008, will be at the NCOTY live final held at The Restaurant Show at Earl’s Court on 11 October. In an interview with BigHospitality after his win, Hulstone revealed what tactics he used to win the prestigious competition.
