The tourism industry in England could be worth £147bn by 2020 and has the potential to create an extra 225,000 jobs according to research by VisitEngland.

The national tourism board values the current visitor economy at £97bn and estimates that the industry employs two million people, but with the implementation of its Strategic Tourism Framework, believes the industry has the potential to grow by £50bn over the next 10 years.

The framework, launched today at the Best of Britain and Ireland Show at London's Olympia, has been developed in collaboration with organisations and individuals across both private and public sectors and sets out an action plan for growth through various different programmes and events.

Positive impact

John Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland, said; "Tourism needs and indeed deserves much greater recognition for the positive impacts it brings to the economy in terms of income, skills and jobs. It is an excellent route into employment at all levels which is why the prospect of increasing the number of jobs the industry supports is so exciting.

"This Framework strives for an even higher standard of quality and service so that we improve our offering, increase jobs, spend and growth and champion a competitive industry”.

VisitEngland chairman Lady Cobham urged 'all areas' of the industry to work with Westminster and Whitehall to help England realise the potential £50bn.

"The industry has jobs to offer and it is time to stand up and all play a part in shaping the future that this industry deserves. VisitEngland has been incredibly encouraged by the renewed enthusiasm for English tourism and looks forward to this continuing”.
