Malmaison owner markets two Edinburgh hotels for £21m

Hotel du Vin and Malmaison owner MWB Group has put two of its Edinburgh hotels on the market as part of an ‘evaluation of the group’s corporate strategy and brand identities’.

The 100-bedroom Malmaison Hotel in Edinburgh, the first of the Malmaison brand when it opened in 1994, has been marketed at £15m while the group seeks an alternative property closer to the city centre in which to host a new 150-bedroom hotel.

Despite acquiring the St Andrew Golf Hotel just two years ago, MWB are marketing the 22-bedroom property for £6m after realising the cost of refurbishing and rebranding the hotel to Hotel du Vin standard was too costly.

Scotland expansion plans

Robert Cook, Malmaison and Hotel du Vin's chief executive officer, said the group was already looking at properties in Edinburgh with a ‘cutting edge design’ in which to create a larger Malmaison hotel.

“Scotland is the original home of Malmaison and our most successful region last year,” he said. “It is our intension to continue expansion north of the border with a new look, larger Malmaison in Edinburgh and a Hotel du Vin in Aberdeen, where our new Malmaison in the city has already experienced great success in its first year.”

Both properties are being marketed through property consultancy Knight Frank LLP.
