UK hotels are leading the upturn in Europe according to a survey by hotel price comparison website Trivago with room prices rising on average 2 per cent to £91 in the last month.
On average, hotel rates in Europe fell 1 per cent between December 2009 and January 2010 and fell 12 per cent over the whole year.
Looking at the UK region by region, England has the most expensive average room prices for January at £93 while Wales has the cheapest at £78. The average room price at hotels in Northern Ireland is £85 and in Scotland is £87.
However, compared to January last year, some room prices are lower on average across the UK with Glasgow seeing an 11 per cent drop in room prices to £74. Birmingham is one of the only cities in the UK to see an increase. Hotels in the Midland city have seen room rates rise 10 per cent in the past year, which Trivago attributes to the city holding the Autosport International Racing Car Show.
The worst hit cities in Europe were Dublin, which has seen average prices fall 42 per cent in the last year, Krakow (down 20 per cent) and Lisbon (down 18 per cent).
Trivago's hotel price index shows the average overnight accommodation prices for the most popular European cities. It calculates averages by studying the prices for overnight accommodation from 53 online travel agents and hotel chains across the continent.
