Restaurants praised for backing healthy food commitment

Industry analysts say the restaurant chains who pledged their support of the FSAs healthy food commitment have made a sensible decision

The restaurant chains who yesterday agreed to work with the Food Standards Agency to improve the number of healthier options on their menus will score highly with consumers, according to industry analysts.

Peter Backman, foodservice analyst and managing director of Horizons said†the fact that operators such as Gondola Holdings, Tragus and The Restaurant Group had committed themselves to the FSA`s scheme showed the `seriousness with which the foodservice industry now has to view healthy eating.`

"Today`s foodservice market is extremely competitive. If customers are demanding these changes on high street menus, then it makes sense for operators to listen. Most consumers will now keep a careful eye on what they are eating - perhaps opting for a light starter and avoiding the more calorie-laden desserts. Operators cannot afford to ignore this trend," said Backman.

The British Hospitality Association said it supported the commercial sector`s decision to improve its healthy menu items as it had done with its contract catering members, but said changes should be made gradually.

A spokesman said: "Consumers can make their choice if healthy option dishes are offered but it`s important that changes aren`t made overnight. This is an area where customers have to be encouraged and persuaded to make the right choice so changes must be gradual. Sudden changes in taste, flavour or texture will put customers off."
